Viral Wart Treatments
Warts are caused due to an infection from the human papilloma virus (HPV). And here’s the not-so-comfortable part: warts can be really painful and last for a long time. Some warts are not harmful and treatment isn’t necessary, they resolve on their own in a couple of years. But if the wart is painful, then it should be cured. If not treated, cervical infection with HPV can even cause cancer. People mostly try to get rid of the warts by using home remedies. Though these are effective but in some cases just a home remedy can’t take care of the wart and a clinical method is required.
Home Treatments
Tape occlusion
It is also known as the duct tape method. Wash the wart area, dry it and apply duct tape to it. Leave it on for a few days. After about a week, rip off the duct tape and leave it overnight. The wart will be gone in no time.
Tropical treatment
Salicylic acid is one of the most effective treatments for wart removal. Apply the acid to the wart area and secure it there with a bandage. After a couple of days, remove the bandage and scrub off the wart. This method is a little painful but is very effective in removing warts.
After a wart treatment, always cover the place with a bandage for a day or two to ensure that germs don’t infect it again. Also occlusion has a better success rate if the bandage is applied after the treatment. Before applying the treatment solution, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the skin around the wart to make sure that it isn’t harmed by the strong solution which is supposed to remove the wart only.
Medical Treatments
Though home remedies are pretty effective in viral wart treatments but in some cases, if the wart has survived for more than 2 years, it becomes necessary to consult a doctor and get a medical treatment for wart removal.
Surgical Removal
Surgical removal of warts is widely practiced and has a success rate of about 65 % -85 %. It is still not recommended because it’s really painful and leaves scars on the body. Also there is no assurance that wart will not occur again. Only go for a surgical treatment if the wart is tough and can’t be removed by any other method.
Chemical Cautery
Silver nitrate can be used to chemically cauterize epithelial tissues for the treatment of viral warts. It results in the removal of warts within a couple of weeks and has a fast rate of removing wart. It is widely used for the treatment of warts.
Canthadarin
It is derived from bristle beetle and is very effective in removing warts. By causing epidermal cell death, it makes the wart to wither away and fall off the skin surface. The blister formation can be painful and may last for a week but this method leaves no scars of wart.
